New Gaia's Voice Recording

Over the last year we have been working hard on a new recording called "Passions and Passages" that will be available on CD and tape. We are now working on post-production and plan to have them ready in February 1997. Later in this issue, you will find all you need to know about making a tax-deductible donation to help defray production costs estimated at $1500. We are planning a release party for February 23.

We already have a limited-edition tape "First Fruits" with four alternate takes of the songs from "Passions and Passages". This is available for $5.

We have also made a new run of Gaia's Voice first tape "Chorus of Life", available for $10, so you can now replace your old worn-out copy or give a copies to friends for Yule.

Upcoming Gaia's Voice Events

Comings and Goings

Gaia's Voice has become a proving ground for change being a constant. Many people have come and lent their voices for a time and then have gone on to other activities, some to further their musical studies or careers. For the time they remain with the chorus, they are members of a singing family. Joys, sorrows, hardships, children, beneficial events are shared, and we all rejoice or grieve with the individual members as they share personal experiences.

The constant influx of new members keeps our interest high and our singing strong. We recently welcomed Gareth as a new member, joining the usually smaller men's contingent. He brings enthusiasm and sight-reading ability and the added convenience of a large house to meet in occasionally.

All of us are involved in various occupations or studies. Catie, a student at the California Institute for Integral Studies is pursuing an M.A. in Celtic and pre-Celtic history and will be leaving us for a couple of months to focus on her research and writing. We are glad she plans to return.

Don and Melissa have been expending their abundant energies in creating music and a musical style of their own, with their skills in guitar, keyboard and vocals, while giving much time as well to the chorus. As they prepare to leave us to give more time to their own performances as the duo "Aural Sects", we thank them for all they have given us -- Melissa for her improvisational ideas, assistance in teaching parts and harmonies, and her solo work, and Don for his faithful managing of recording equipment as he helped shepherd us through the creation process of our forthcoming recording. Don has also been a bulwark of the baritone section with his good sense of pitch and quick catching on. We will miss these folks greatly, but look forward to hearing much great music from "Aural Sects".

We are still nine singers strong and will continue to recruit and grow and bring new music to the Pagan community and the Bay Area.

Holy Light - a Pagan reverence to Santa Lucia

Music traditional, New Lyrics copyright Laurel Olson, 1993

Burn bright, oh holy light, shine 'til the morning,
Hope through the longest night of new day's dawning.

   Light our poor candle-flame.
   Put every shade to flight.
   Burn bright oh holy light,
   Holy Lucia

Burn bright, oh holy light, Queen of the morning.
Bearing the Sun so bright, home from his faring.

   Light our poor candle-flame.
   Put every shade to flight.
   Burn bright oh holy light,
   Holy Lucia

Burn bright, oh holy light, come with the morning.
Robed in your gown of white, hope's promise answering.

   Light our poor candle-flame.
   Put every shade to flight.
   Burn bright oh holy light,
   Holy Lucia

Above are the lyrics to one of the carols Gaia's Voice sings during the Yule Season. I use this carol right through to Brigid's day, since Her day falls at the time when we really begin to see the strengthening of day. In my personal spiritual practice, I honor Lucia as a face of Brigid.

December 13 is Santa Lucia's Day in Sweden. In my personal practice, I honor this day as a time when the promised return of light and warmth is being affirmed. Warm cakes and coffee are brought by a priestess of light crowned in fire and evergreen. In my home, that's me because there are no little girls.

I feel no conflict in my faith as a heathen and witch with this practice. In fact, Holy Light will be invoked this Yule at the NROOGD public Sabbat as one of the Goddesses. Her priestess will be there crowned in flame.
